Walking Together with Courage

Each year, National Reconciliation Week celebrates the rich culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme this year is ‘Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage’. Fostering strong and meaningful relationships, grounded in a foundation of truth and trust between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Aboriginal people, is at the heart of reconciliation.

Running from 27 May – 3 June, these dates mark significant milestones in Australia's reconciliation journey: The 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision, respectively.

WentWest is committed from the Board level and throughout the whole organisation to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, and to share that knowledge. As of 30th June 2016 (ABS Census), 1.7% of the western Sydney population is Aboriginal and or Torres Straight Islander.*

To kick start our internal lunch and learn sessions, our Aboriginal Health team who are also apart of our RAP Working Group hosted the very first session, to educate staff about the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in western Sydney and understood more about the current progress of our RAP - Reflect deliverables.

For more information about the many ways WentWest is prioritising Aboriginal health please visit the WentWest website. To learn more about Reconciliation Week please visit Reconciliation Australia.

Collaborative Pairs Australia

Collaborative Pairs marks a transformation in health leadership, one where consumers and service providers work in genuine partnership to lead person-centred health care, services and systems. The initiative is designed to enable health professionals (clinicians and service providers) and consumers to develop capacity in working collaboratively to influence and transform the health system. To read more about this opportunity or to submit your application visit the CommunityHQ website.

Applications for the second Collaborative Pairs cohort in western Sydney close on Sunday 30th June.

Digital Health Cyber Security

The Australian Digital Health Agency have released two cyber security alerts this week that warn of potential attacks compromising Australian business Remote Desktop Protocol services.

Please ensure you read both security alerts for more information on potential impacts and recommended actions.

HIV Testing Week

Latest NSW data shows the lowest annual number of HIV infections in 2018 since records began. However, a small cluster of HIV infections has been observed among patients not typically seen as being at risk of HIV.

During HIV Testing Week 1–7 June, NSW Health encourages health professionals to offer testing to a diverse range of patients at risk of HIV. This includes testing anyone who asks for a HIV test regardless of their HIV risk profile.

Community Services Expo

On Monday 20th May, Doonside Public School held its annual Community Services Expo. The school was supported on the day by 21 local services and over 150 families. These partnerships are a strong support for students and their families. Each year organisations are invited to attend the expo to provide information about their organisation.

Thrive@5 in Doonside supported the event with an information stall on local health services and health information. One of Thrive@5 partner organisations Blacktown Library provided books for the event and 40 Thrive@5 book bags were distributed to children on the day.
