My Health Record resources for health professionals

After the commencement of the My Health Record opt-out period in 16 July this year, Health Minister Greg Hunt recently announced that the period will be extended until 15 November. This gives Australians more time to consider their options.

In western Sydney, 77% of general practices and 88% of pharmacies are connected to My Health Record. Our Consumer Engagement Co-ordinator, Robyn Wilms is helping build awareness in the community and is available to conduct face-to-face patient information sessions. If you would like Robyn to visit your practice or pharmacy, please call your Practice Development Officer or email myhealthrecord@wentwest.com.au.

To assist further with questions regarding My Health Record and the opt-out period, health professionals and consumers have access to a large variety of seminars and online resources, including:

  • The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) are hosting free webinars and GPs are accredited for 4 Category 2 RACGP QI&CPD points if they attend part one and part two in the series.
  • The Australian Digital Health Agency have produced videos to aid GPs around having the conversation with their patients that address any privacy concerns. In the video Scene 1: The Opt-Out Conversation, Diane and her Doctor are discussing how she can set up controls on her My Health Record account that can be viewed with a pin number.
  • Other online materials such as opt-out collateral and case studies are available to assist when discussing My Health Record with patients.
  • The Consumers Health Forum of Australia has launched a series of webinars for the benefit of health consumers to help make an informed decision about whether to opt-out of My Health Record.

Resources and information about My Health Record are also available in languages other than English.

Exciting opportunities for GPs to influence healthcare

Are you a western Sydney GP who would like to work more with your community? Evidence shows that the rewards for doctors' community work are far-reaching. While patients and the broader community undoubtedly benefit, doctors also profit from the experience in terms of stronger community connections, peer feedback and a chance to impact health care change.

The Western Sydney Primary Health Network, WentWest and the Local Health District are calling for EOIs from GPs who would like to champion the areas of Integrated and Chronic Care, Youth Health, Refugee and CALD Health, and Child and Family Health.
